“OF THAT VAGUE FUTURE YOU HAD IN MIND”

By Mauro Marturano

I'm recalling this famous line from Leopardi, in which he imagined Silvia's youthful hopes, the future that she, in her youth, pictured for herself.

Leopardi, a renowned wanker (they say he went blind from all the jerking off 😂), told us about this female figure in the poem "To Silvia."

A figure who wasn't entirely invented, but who is generally identified with Teresa Fattorini, a young woman from Recanati whom Leopardi knew by sight (back when he could still see 😂), the daughter of the Leopardi family's coachman.

In the line quoted, Leopardi isn't simply remembering Teresa, but the future full of hopes that Silvia/Teresa imagined.

It's a line that, if you think about it, links Silvia to so many of us 😂.

We had/you had a vague future in mind 😁 and WONDERFUL HOPES.

And probably little of what we imagined will be left to us.

Certainly not our pensions.

Certainly not healthcare.

Certainly not a good education.

Certainly not the same value of the money earned through our work.

Quoting the words of Madam Ursula, "a new normal" 😁 or, better said, "that vague future you had in mind" 😂.

What's taking shape for the average dim-witted European citizen is entry into a genuine meat grinder.

Because, if it's true that we're used to hearing them fire off big claims, it's also true that, in the end, they always make the numbers add up (in their favor).

Europe is certainly shaping up to be the next cash cow to be milked 😂.
